Man City refuse to confirm Erling Haaland shirt number with Arsenal transfer target Gabriel Jesus taking preferred No9 | The Sun

ERLING HAALAND has been officially confirmed as a Manchester City player this morning – but the superstar striker is yet to be assigned a shirt number.

And fans are convinced the 21-year-old is waiting to nab the No9 shirt off Gabriel Jesus.

Jesus is expected to leave the Etihad this summer and has been linked with a move to Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.

His impending departure would free up the No9 shirt for Haaland, who has worn the number for the last two seasons at Borussia Dortmund and currently dons it for Norway.

City though cannot announce Haaland as their new No9 with Jesus still at the club.

In his unveiling this morning, City said: "Haaland shirts will be made available once his squad number is confirmed in due course".

And some fans reckon the club are waiting until Jesus' imminent departure to confirm Haaland's number.

One social media user wrote: "He could be waiting for the number 9 jersey from Gabriel Jesus who looks set to leave the club."

Another said: "Haaland ripping the #9 from Gabriel Jesus."

Meanwhile others believe Haaland could take No15 instead – the same number his dad Alfe Inge wore while playing for City.

Haaland posted a throwback shot on social media on Saturday of himself as a toddler wearing a City kit with his dad's name and No15 on the back.

Speaking after being unveiled as a City player this morning, Haaland told mancity.com: “This is a proud day for me and my family.

“I have always watched City and have loved doing so in recent seasons. You can’t help but admire their style of play, it’s exciting and they create a lot of chances, which is perfect for a player like me.

“There are so many world-class players in this squad and Pep is one of the greatest managers of all-time, so I believe I am in the right place to fulfil my ambitions.

“I want to score goals, win trophies and improve as a footballer and I am confident I can do that here. This is a great move for me and I can’t wait to get started in pre-season.”
