Racing dynasties take over as ageing dads leave superstar stables to their sons | The Sun

THE names are the same but the faces are very different.

Scan the racecards these days and all the old favourites are there – Gosden, Charlton, Crisford and Cole, to name but a few.

But the devil is in the detail, because all these famous names of old are handing over their empires to their sons.

Iconic handler John Gosden announced two-and-a-half years ago that his boy Thady was joining him on his licence.

Since then their powerhouse Clarehaven yard has showed no sign of slowing down – even if a bust-up with Frankie Dettori temporarily scuppered things.

Thady, who studied History of Art at Bristol University and is in his late 20s, always intended to become a trainer.

Since being added to the licence he has banged in more than 300 winners alongside his old man.

The long list includes Oaks winner Soul Sister, Ascot Gold Cup champ Courage Mon Ami and Champion Fillies and Mares Stakes winner Emily Upjohn.

You can add Mishriff's £7.3million Saudi Cup victory to that as well.

Together, the pair are top of this season's championship table with almost £6.5m in prize money and over 100 winners.

Derby-winning trainer Roger Charlton has brought son Harry onto his licence at their Beckhampton stables in Marlborough.

Harry will assume full control at the end of the season and his old man reckons it's the perfect time to have a fresh face.

Explaining his decision, Roger said: "Harry is extremely able and bright, it's right for him to hold the licence.

"It's right for Beckhampton to have a younger image going forward. It's the sensible thing to do."

Simon and Ed Crisford have had a cracking season thanks in part to their unbeaten superstar Vandeek.

The father-son duo made history in 2020 when they became Britain's first officially licenced training partnership.

And they have gone from strength to strength since, with Vandeek bagging two Group 1s en route to earning nearly half a million quid this year.

Paul and Oliver Cole run the 'VIP' Whatcombe yard together, while Martyn Meade has operated under a joint licence with son Freddie since May last year.
