An Argentinian sculptor took some artistic license on a statue of legendary River Plate player and manager, Marcelo Gallardo, resulting in a noticeable bulge in the piece’s crotch area.
The 26-foot-tall, seven-ton statue was recently unveiled outside the club’s Monumental Stadium, showing, Gallardo hoisting the Copa Libertadores above his head while his midsection sports a noticeable bulge.
In response to uproar over the protruding package, sculptor Mercedes Savall claims it was a deliberate decision on her part.
‘This is [soccer], fans always ask the players and the manager to ‘put a lot of eggs [effort] into it’ and it was like a subliminal message through the sculpture,’ Savall told Infobae.
And according to Savall, Gallardo had no complaints: ‘Luckily, he didn’t ask for explanations about the statue, he let me work in peace.’

Gallardo was the coach of River Plate until last season. The 47-year-old guided the team 14 titles over eight seasons.
Speaking at the unveiling, Gallardo thanked the club while avoiding mention of the elephant-sized bulge in the room.
‘I want to express my gratitude to my family, my friends, my coaching staff and the players who have accompanied us,’ he said.
‘This club is great for its history but also for its glories. Thanks to the fans. I will always love you. I grew up in this club and I will die in this club.’
Some fans were delighted with the piece and its unveiling on Saturday.

‘I love how strategically River Plate have cropped these images of Gallardo’s new state,’ wrote one fan, observing the club’s decision to focus on the bulge in pictures from the unveiling.
Others took issue with the sculpture.
‘Was it necessary, after so many months waiting for the statue, to make the bundle like this?’ read a translated tweet from one fan. ‘And that everyone is now talking about it? I don’t understand how the River leadership allows them to do such a stupid thing! It seems disrespectful to Gallardo.’
‘Honestly a lack of respect for Gallardo,’ read another translated tweet. ‘Grossly disproportionate and intentionally enlarged genitalia. Very out of place. The truth is that with that statue they give rise to ridicule and comments. Unbelievable that no one from the club has checked that statue.’
