Poulter leads after making an eagle!

This early in the day there is hardly any point in naming a leader with a lot of the field still to play but we are going to do it anyway!

Englishman Poulter walked onto the tee early this morning and was met with boos from punters following his decision to join the Saudi breakaway LIV Series.

It looked to have got to him as he hooked his opening tee shot over the 18th fairway and was just inches from the road.

But after scrambling to make par, he has now got into his groove and has just made a monster putt in for eagle on the par 4 9th and tops the leaderboard.

    Good morning from St Andrews

And welcome to SunSport's live coverage of the 150th Open Championship.

The action teed off a little after half past six with the 1999 champion Paul Lawrie striking the opening shot of this year's tournament to a rapturous reception.

However, it's been a disappointing morning for two of Lawrie's fellow Brits.

First, there were audible boos for Ian Poulter on the first tee, following his controversial decision to join Greg Norman's LIV Golf Series.

And then Justin Rose was forced to withdraw from the competition before he had struck a ball due to a back injury sustained in practice.

Home hopes for the Claret Jug may instead now be pinned on Rory McIlroy, who is due out just before 10am.

We're set for a gripping four days so stick with us for all the action from the Old Course.
