Adele Roberts has revealed that she was undergoing chemotherapy during her appearance on the Great British Celebrity Bake Off.
The radio star, 44, who announced she was cancer-free in June last year, revealed in October 2021 that she had been diagnosed with stage two bowel cancer, and later had surgery to remove a tumour and began using a stoma bag.
Adele was taking part in a special celebrity edition of the hit baking show, which is pre-recorded and it aired on Sunday, to raise vital funds for the Stand Up To Cancer campaign.
Taking to Twitter after the show aired, Adele revealed that she was undergoing chemotherapy while on the show and had an ice machine to keep her cool.
Responding to a fan, she wrote: "Thank you so much Ryan! I was actually on chemo in the tent. I was overheating most of the time. I had an ice machine to keep me cool.
"I also can’t remember most of this. I know I had an amazing day… but watching it back now is so special #GBBO."
Adele also bravely spoke about her cancer battle on the show, saying: "I have absolutely loved the past couple of days.
"I am so thrilled to be here. In October last year, I was diagnosed with stage two bowel cancer. And this is the first big challenge I’ve really taken on since I finished chemotherapy.
"I've also recently found out that I'm cancer-free and so it's even more special doing an amazing show like this because I know that it does actually help save lives."
During the show, Adele was sadly pipped to victory by fellow competitor David Morrissey, she was “close on his heels” according to Prue Leith, and did impress the judges with her stunning Popcorn Bucket themed showstopper, based on her perfect idea of a day off – a trip to the movies!
The red and white striped cake featured a fondant iced popcorn label, plenty of butter popcorn and even a cake based hot dog as she posed alongside a tongue in cheek list of films on offer for the discerning viewer, which included many food themed titles such as Lord of the Party Rings and Life of Pie.
Throughout her battle with cancer, Adele was always incredibly honest with the reality of her disease, and frequently documented every step of her journey.
After announcing she was cancer-free in June last year, she is now encouraging others to speak to a professional early on if they spot any of the signs.
Acknowledging it wasn’t always easy to ask for help, Adele admitted: “It took me a while to pluck up the courage to call my GP at first.
"My symptoms seemed like things I could explain away. I didn’t want to be a burden to the NHS and I was embarrassed.
"I shouldn’t have worried. My GP took my concerns seriously, put me at ease and also offered me a home-testing kit. This meant I was able to do the test in the comfort of my own home.
"Soon after I was diagnosed with stage two bowel cancer, which was very nearly developing into stage three.
"Getting the help I needed in time helped save my life. If you’re worried please speak to someone, early detection saves lives and it helped save mine."
