AJ Pritchard described his relationship with ex-girlfriend Abbie Quinnen as “stronger than ever” just weeks before they couple announced their split after four years together.
Former Strictly Come Dancing pro AJ made the comments on Sunday night’s episode of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, as he emotionally recounted Abbie’s devastating accident just 7 months prior to filming the show.
Abbie, 25, suffered third degree burns after her hair extensions and clothes caught fire in a freak accident, leaving the professional dancer with life changing injuries and permanent scarring.
The incident was part of a social media stunt gone wrong, and left Abbie requiring round the clock care as she underwent a skin graft to try and repair the damage to her body.
Despite the incident being an accident, it was still clear from his interview on Celebrity SAS that AJ was still dealing with the harrowing ordeal and still hadn’t processed the trauma of what had happened to someone he clearly loved.
“Earlier this year, I was trying to turn a wine bottle into a vase to put flowers in for my girlfriend,” AJ explained during an interview with the SAS staff.
“And in doing so, when lighting the piece of rope that was around the top of the bottle to break it off into the sink of water, it caught her hair extensions and caught her sports top.”
Struggling to remain composed, AJ could be seen looking visibly upset as he recalled the harrowing moment, but still he continued, adding: “She was in a fireball, her top, her hair, and it put her in a situation where she had to go to hospital for five or six days in intensive care. Her ear was fundamentally non-existent. ”
“It got infected. The first two operations…”
With tears running down his cheeks, AJ still continued, clearly pained by the memory: “Everyone kept saying, that’s why they invent the word accident!
“People would tell me that – they still tell me that now – but that that happened to her has just questioned… you question a lot of things. Why, when, what?”
Discussing the latest SAS challenge he had just taken part in, AJ went on: “When we were doing the exercise, the driving exercise, the fire barrel that was on the left hand side went off in the fire, I realised I haven’t obviously come to terms with the situation.”
“It just brought back a vivid image of her, in front of me… in a fireball.”
Following the brave and emotional piece of testimony, the show’s SAS staff asked AJ if she was alright now and whether they were still together, to which AJ responded they were “stronger than ever” as she continued to recover from her injuries.
However the couple announced their split late last month after four years together.
