All we know as first The Last of Us TV show trailer drops – date, cast and plot

It has been nearly 10 years since the original The Last of Us released on the PS3 in 2013, changing the landscape of video games in the process.

Since then, The Last of Us Remastered and The Last of Us Part II dropped on the PS4, and a remake of The Last of Us Part I just released on the PS5.

The franchise is only going from strength to strength, as the game developer, Naughty Dog, is also working on a new multiplayer game within the series.

Before that, the long-waited HBO TV show will premiere, with the first trailer just releasing this week.

It looks to be a fairly faithful adaptation of the first game – here is everything you need to know.

What is the release date of The Last of Us?

There is no specific release date for The Last of US TV series, but the trailer does end by revealing a premiere window of 2023.

There is reason to be hopeful though, as earlier this year HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter that "it's closer to early 2023”.

Filming wrapped back in June 2022, when the 13-month long shoot ended in Canada.

This definitely puts it on track for an early 2023 premiere, but nothing is certain until HBO confirms it.

Who is in the cast of The Last of Us?

The series follows Joel, a hardened and bitter survivor who has lost faith in humanity after the collapse of civilisation.

He will be played by Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal.

Joel will watch over Ellie on their epic journey, a seemingly ordinary girl that doesn’t want any part in this chaotic world.

She will be played by another Game of Thrones alumni, Bella Ramsey, best known as Lady Lyanna Mormont in that show.

The cast also includes Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Joel's younger brother; Merle Dandridge as The Fireflies leader Marlene, and Nico Parker as Joel's daughter Sarah.

Anna Torv will be playing Tess, Joel's friend and smuggler; Nick Offerman will play Bill, and Murray Bartlett will portray Frank.

Joel and Ellie original voice actors, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, will also appear in undisclosed roles.

What is the plot of The Last of Us?

The Last of Us is a story of survival in a brutal, post-apocalyptic USA.

Joel and Ellie are forced to travel across the US for what appears to be an ordinary smuggling job at first, but soon expands into a mission that could change the fate of everyone.

The official synopsis reads: "The Last of Us story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone.

"What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the US and depend on each other for survival."

How to watch The Last of Us in the UK

HBO may be developing The Last of Us, but it will have a different home in the UK.

Sky has confirmed that it will air the series, which is no surprise as it has had a long-running partnership with HBO to air most of its content here.

Recent examples include House of the Dragon, Euphoria and Succession.

Jamie Morris, Sky's director of programs for the UK and Ireland, said earlier this year: "Our relationship with HBO continues to go from strength to strength. They’ve had a great year. The HBO slate is great and they’re creative co-production partners with us.

"One way or the other that relationship will continue. In what shape, we will wait and see."
