Antiques Roadshow guest surprised at value of chairs found in a skip
Antiques Roadshow’s Mark Hill enthusiastically observed some chairs brought in by a guest and left him stunned by the estimated value.
What he didn’t realise was that the guest had in fact found the two chairs chucked away in a skip.
Luckily, he seemed to realise they were salvageable and could also be worth something.
Looking at the pair of cushioned chairs, expert Mark explained how comfortable they looked in a recent episode of the BBC staple.
“These look really comfy,” he stated as the guest confirmed: “They are,” before Mark learned about the background on the items.
“And I’m presuming that’s why you bought them,” Mark guessed, but the owner revealed he’d actually stumbled across the furniture.
“I didn’t buy them, I actually acquired them,” he replied. “They were going to go into a skip and then when I got them out and put them together, I was just like, ‘They’re stunning.'”
He went on: “I’ve always been a fan of midcentury furniture.”
“So midcentury-modern, we’re thinking the mid-20th century and that’s absolutely where these date from, so you’re bang on with the date,” Mark detailed.

“Fantastic!” the guest responded, looking surprised. “It’s good to know.”
“Not bad for skip diving, is it?” Mark pointed out as the owner of the chairs agreed: “Not bad for skip diving at all.”
“Congratulations,” Mark beamed as the guest took in the news.
Antiques Roadshow continues on Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.
