Call the Midwife confirms two newcomers with secret traumatic past

Call the Midwife: Helen George and Olly Rix discuss wedding

Three more Call the Midwife series have been confirmed, so there are plenty more Poplar tales to come from the now well-loved characters, but two new arrivals are set to shake things up.

This Christmas, student midwives and roommates Joyce Highland (played by Renee Bailey) and Rosalind Clifford (Natalie Quarry) will be making their Call The Midwife debuts.

Joyce has been described as “hardworking, fiercely bright and deeply kind,” but secretly hides a traumatic past.

Meanwhile, Rosalind is “naive at times, but with an inner steeliness.”

Writer Heidi Thomas explained: “Newcomers Joyce and Rosalind arrive with much to learn.”

Speaking to Radio Times about the drama entering 1969, she added: “Even as man prepares to walk on the Moon, we see them grappling with life’s eternal questions.

“Who are we? What is love? And where do we belong?”

Executive producer Dame Pippa Harris added of the two newcomers: “They’re a wonderful addition to the show.

“I can’t wait for the audience to meet Joyce and Rosalind and to follow their journeys, by bicycle, through the streets and lives of Poplar’s residents.”

The most recent instalments of Call The Midwife saw Trixie Franklin (Helen George) tying the knot with Matthew Aylward (Olly Rix).

With the recent departure of nurse Lucille (Leonie Elliot), Helen confessed she has a fear of also being written out of the show.

Speaking back in March, she told Radio Times: “You never have complete control. Absolutely, it’s a genuine fear. never have complete control. You never know.”

It’s clear though that the series remains in demand with fans, with another three series given the green light.

Speaking earlier this year, Heidi revealed she was “overjoyed” at the renewals.

She stated: “Call the Midwife is the pride and joy of all who work on it, but it’s our fantastic, loyal audience that matters most.

“We are a family behind the scenes, on the screen, and in front of the telly, and I’m thrilled that we’re all heading into the 1970s together.”

Call the Midwife is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
