CORONATION Street legend Barbara Knox was left emotional after receiving a huge honour for her 90th birthday.

The soap actress, 89, was attending the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show when she received the honour.


She was presented with a rare rose that has been named after her.

Barbara, who has starred in Coronation Street for half a century, beamed when 'Gracious Lady' was given to her.

The touching gesture comes ahead of Barbara's upcoming 90th birthday.

Reacting to the honour, she told ITV News: "I'm so thrilled and delighted.

"Sometimes you get presents, and they are lovely, but this one will live with me for a very long time.

"I'm delighted with it. I love the colour."

Knox, who plays the role of Rita Tanner on the ITV1 soap, was also reunited with Thelma Barlow.

Thelma played the role of Mavis Wilton on the cobbles between 1971 and 1997.

Barbara described her reunion with Thelma as "magnificent" before discussing their on-screen partnership.

Barbara said: "She was the best partner I could ever have had.

"We were great friends, we were so fond of each other, we went everywhere together. We really were good friends as well as acting together so well.

"We've kept in touch over the years and thank god she looks so well."

She added: "I would love Mavis back, like a shot."

Fans were delighted to see the women back together, with one writing alongside a video of them laughing: "This is completely iconic!

Les Dennis – who has also appeared in Coronation Street – replied: "How wonderful."

Another fan wrote: "I have a great fondness for Rita and Mavis and great admiration for the two ladies who brought them to life."
