EastEnders' Adrian Edmondson is worlds away from Albert Square in first look at A Christmas Carol | The Sun

DIEHARD EastEnders fans will recognise him as Albert Square’s Daniel Cook.

But acclaimed actor Adrian Edmondson, who appeared in the BBC soap as Jean Slater’s boyfriend from 2019 to 2020, looks world apart from his EastEnders’ alter-ego in his brand new role.

The 65-year-old star, who is married to Jennifer Saunders, will be stepping into the shoes of A Christmas Carol’s infamous villain Ebenezer Scrooge later this year.

He’ll take centre stage in the Royal Shakespeare Company's revival of David Edgar's adaptation of Charles Dickens' popular classic story.

And in newly released promotional shots for the upcoming show, Adrian, who sprang to fame in Bottom alongside comedy partner Rik Mayall, couldn’t look more different to his soap character.

The dad-of-three can be seen wearing a scruffy suit under a brown dressing gown, while the tufts of grey hair and sideburns make him look noticeably older.

He said: “I'm really looking forward to playing Scrooge.

“Why, you might ask, would you watch a show about a really horrible person?

“You watch it because you're cheering him on, urging him to become a better person.
