Fans wonder if EastEnders has forgotten its first drag queen actor in David Dale

EastEnders fans were left delighted when the show confirmed last week that it was introducing its first ever regular drag character.

Tara Misu, the Drag alter-ego of newcomer Felix Baker (Matthew Morrison), will make her on-screen debut later this week.

The announcement was received incredibly well by fans of the show, with one declaring it the ‘best EastEnders news in a long time’.

Some viewers, however, had an issue with the fact that Tara was referred to as EastEnders’ ‘first’ drag queen, making reference to John Fisher, a character who featured in the show in 1986.

‘David Dale was the first drag queen and was in Eastenders for around 8 weeks,’ exclaimed one fan on social media.

Another added: ‘BBC has announced its first regular drag actor to appear in Eastenders. Except that they chose to ignore the actual first regular drag actor was David Dale. He worked at the Queen Vic when Den & Angie ran it.’

Why does nobody research properly anymore?
The fist drag Queen appeared in Eastenders right back at the beginning, and was David Dale.

Wrong!!!!
The first drag queen on eastenders was and still is the very talented David Dale.

Angie Watts, who was landlady of the Queen Vic at the time, collaborated with husband Den on live entertainment evenings, hoping to bolster trade, which they believed could be affected by Angie’s drink driving case.

The first drag night proved a success, and John – played by Dave Dale – would pop up on a recurring basis, appearing in a total of 8 episodes, even making an appearance in the 100th episode.

Actor Matthew Morrison, meanwhile, will debut as Felix/Tara in the fourth of this week’s four editions of the soap.

On taking on the role, Matthew told us: ‘I am blessed to have the opportunity to step into the heels of the fierce Tara Misu as part of my role on EastEnders.

‘It’s a privilege to represent the LGBTQIA+ community and to showcase the creative art of drag to both viewers at home and the residents of Walford.’

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
