HBO Responds to Rumors The Idol Wont Return for Season 2

After it is reported that the controversial series will not be returning for a second season amid backlash, HBO’s communications team sets the record straight in a Twitter post.

AceShowbiz -HBO has set the record straight amid uproar saying that “The Idol” will not be returning for a second season amid backlash. On Thursday, June 15, HBO’s communications team clarified the reports in a Twitter post.

“It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined,” the @HBOPR account wrote. “It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.”

Speculations that “The Idol”, which stars The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp, will most likely be canceled after one season. Page Six reported on Thursday that the fate of the program was unclear. A source told the news outlet, “This was never meant to be a long-running show, it was always … a limited series.”

A source inside HBO, however, noted that “the door is definitely still open – it’s definitely not a decision [yet].” The informant added, “At this point, this is normal in our process … we’re only two episodes in.”

The insider continued that HBO was not surprised by reaction to the graphic show, which is co-created by The Weeknd, Sam Levinson (“Euphoria) and Reza Fahim. “It’s a Sam Levinson show, and you know what you’re getting with a Sam Levinson show,” the source added.

“The Idol” follows Britney Spears-style pop star Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose, who falls into the clutches of a cult leader, Tedros, played by The Weeknd. Following its premiere, fans criticized the show for the amount of nudity featured on the show. Viewers were also left horrified by a “nasty” sex scene in the second episode of the series.

In response to the criticism, The Weeknd defended x-rated sex scene. There’s nothing sexy about it,” the singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, revealed to GQ in an interview published on Tuesday, June 13.

The Canadian star added, “However you’re feeling watching that scene, whether it’s discomfort, or you feel gross, or you feel embarrassed for the characters. It’s all those emotions adding up to: this guy is in way over his head, this situation is one where he is not supposed to be here.”

The Weeknd further explained that the sex scene is portrayed in such a “gluttonous” way because his character, a mysterious club owner, “can’t believe he’s there.” He elaborated, “You look at him, and this is a score – Jocelyn might be the biggest score he’s ever had. It’s very obvious. He’s over-indulging, he walks into this house looking around like, ‘Goddamn, am I way over my head? This can be the biggest job I’ve ever done.’ “

In the interview, The Weeknd also weighed in on his character. “He’s despicable, a psychopath – why sugarcoat it?” the singer-turned-actor opined. “There’s nothing really mysterious or hypnotizing about him. And we did that on purpose with his look, his outfits, his hair – the guy’s a douchebag.”

In the said episode, Tedros could be seen making some NSFW dirty talk to Jocelyn. He told the vulnerable pop star to “f**kin’ stretch that tiny little p***y” while she stuck her fingers in her mouth. He also said, “Make that throat wet for me,” and “Imagine my tongue on your p***y – my fat tongue.”
