Jennifer Ellison teases epic soap return after two decades off screens | The Sun

BROOKSIDE star Jennifer Ellison has revealed that she would jump at the chance to appear on the beloved show again, two decades after it was spiked.

Jennifer, 40, became a household name playing Emily Shadwick on the soap from 1998 until 2003.

Brookside was cancelled in June 2003 because of low ratings following a long run, which saw it pull in 9 million viewers in its heyday.

From 2000, the viewing figures were in "terminal decline" and the final episode, broadcast on 4th November 2003, was watched by around two-million viewers.

After it got axed, the mum-of-three went on to a career in the arts industry.

She posed for some of the biggest lads mags as well as launching a pop music career.

The former glamour model also appeared on Dancing on Ice in 2012 alongside professional partner Daniel Whiston, and they ended up in fourth place after being voted out in the semi-final.

But the Liverpudlian actress hasn't ruled out returning to a Brookside revival, even though her character was "killed off" when she fell through a window during a robbery which went wrong.

In an interview on Good Morning Britain, Kate Garraway said: "Brookside was my soap. My mum and dad didn't really watch soaps, but the Saturday Omnibus edition – I was all over that and so many people still are, aren't they? And want it to come back!"

Jennifer answered: "Yeah, so many people. I get stopped in the street constantly and of all the things I've done, it's Brookside that people always talk about."

"I think anyone who was involved in it… it holds such a special place in all our hearts, that I couldn't say no. I'd feel like I was cheating all the people who'd given me the start in this industry."

"So yeah, I'd love to see it come back, it would be amazing. And there's so many people who would love to see it come back."

Jennifer's former co-star Claire Sweeney recently claimed that the soap should never have been decommissioned by television bosses.

During her interview on ITV's Lorraine, the host asked: "Now Brookside, there are so many unfinished stories, there and so many stories still to be told. Is it something maybe in the distance which might come back?"

Claire replied: "I don't think it should ever have been axed because it was so gritty. I don't know what happened, and it was a shame, such a shame. Hollyoaks kind of took over that place really and that got a lot more gritty."

Brookside is available to watch on STV Player until 31st January 2024.
