Kate Garraway won a National Television Award for her heartbreaking ITV documentary Caring For Derek on Thursday night. The Good Morning Britain host was congratulated for her win by Ben Shephard on Friday’s instalment of the news programme. However, he told viewers Kate, 55, had “lost” the award.

Ben, 47, welcomed viewers to the latest instalment of Good Morning Britain by telling them Kate was a “champion”.

She laughed: “The champion? I don’t know about that!”

Ben said he was “thrilled to bits” for Kate for winning the accolade for best Authored Documentary at last night’s awards show.

However, he said: “We are thrilled to bits but I was hoping to be able to show you the trophy, the National TV Award itself, but Kate has lost it.”

She snapped: “No I haven’t lost it. Right, this is the kind of libellous talk. I haven’t lost it, I just felt a bit awkward about bringing it in because it’s a sensitive subject.

“It was right there by the door but I don’t want people to think I am sort of showing off.”

Ben continued to tease her about losing the trophy, adding: “It wasn’t where you left it and suddenly you thought, ‘Where have I put it?'”

Kate stated she had not lost the trophy, but she admitted she had misplaced her purse, makeup bag and “everything else” on Friday morning following a night at the awards show.

“The award was right there, it was right there,” the longtime Good Morning Britain presenter stressed.

She later brought the silver trophy onto the programme and thanked viewers for voting for her.

It comes after Kate won a National Television Award in 2021 for her work exploring her husband Derek Draper’s battle post-Covid in the documentary Finding Derek.

Derek is currently in hospital receiving further treatment and he still requires round-the-clock care.

Kate told fans at the ceremony she and her family “hoped to have him home soon”.

Dozens of viewers congratulated Kate for her award win on Twitter, with Sarah McCarthy adding: “Massive congratulations @kategarraway. Well deserved.

“I honestly don’t know how you manage to keep it all together with looking after Derek when you’re not at work, looking after the kids and working. Derek and the kids are very lucky to have you.”

Neil Mashiter said: “Kate is an absolute treasure congratulations on winning the award so well deserved.”

@Wildcard penned: “Such good news. Well done Kate on your reward which you deserved.”

Linda noted: “I love how Kate hugged Tom Walker’s wife before collecting her award. Just shows what a caring person she is.” (sic)

Angela Coulter remarked: “Congratulations Kate and Derek, well deserved.”

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays from 6am on ITV.
