Ken Bruce delighted BBC rejected offer to protect PopMaster

Ken Bruce on dispute over BBC exit

Ahead of the new PopMaster TV show, following the huge success the quiz has had on Ken Bruce’s radio show over the years, the 72-year-old confessed the BBC didn’t want to copyright the name.

Speaking about their rejection, he told i Newspaper: “‘I asked somebody within the BBC if they wished to come in and protect [the PopMaster name].

“They said, “Nah, you’re alright, I don’t think we want to get involved in doing that.

“So I went to the trademark office and trademarked it.‘I’ve still got the patent.

“I kept renewing it and I’m delighted that we’re able to keep using it in this way. There wasn’t any massive legal battle.”

When he left, Ken took the PopMaster quiz with him as it continued to be part of his new show.

Following its huge popularity with radio listeners, it’s been commissioned by More4 to have its own six-part series.

Similar to the usual quiz, two contestants will be pitted against each other as their knowledge of music is put to the test.

Being asked 10 questions based on popular music, which ranges from the 1950s to the present day, they’ll be awarded three points.

I can’t wait to get started – and find out whether I might have a face for TV after all!”
