NBC’s procedural drama Law and Order made its epic return to screens with season 21 after a lengthy 12-year hiatus. After the finale aired in May, it was revealed star Anthony Anderson would not reprise his role as Kevin Bernard, which showrunner Rick Eid addressed.

The long-awaited revival of Law and Order was announced in September 2021.

The procedural drama was the original series which spawned the creation of its hit spin-offs Law and Order: SVU and Law and Order: OC.

However, its popularity dwindled and the original series was cancelled in 2010 due to rapidly diminishing ratings.

After 12 years Law and Order returned to screens for season 21, with many of the original stars reprising the roles of their beloved characters.

This included Anthony Anderson who made his first appearance on the show as Kevin Bernard, an NYPD Detective.

Kevin was first introduced during season 18’s Burn Card, where he served as an Internal Affairs Detective.

He then decided to transfer to the Homicide department after Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin) retired from the NYPD.

Despite, his return in season 21 it was announced Anthony would not reprise his role for the upcoming instalment, much to the surprise of fans.

In a new interview, Law and Order’s showrunner Rick Eid revealed season 22 would address Kevin’s departure.

Rick explained it would be a simple line and not take away from an entire episode.

“It’s a little mention, it’s in the time-honoured tradition of Law & Order where it’s very brief and it’s like, ‘Moving on. Here we go. We’ve got to solve the case,’” he told TV Line.

With Anthony’s departure, this leaves Sam Waterson as the only original star expected to appear in season 22.

It was also revealed that Anthony had initially signed a one-year deal for the show.

The actor addressed his departure and shared he had not planned to return to Law and Order on a permanent basis.

He said he wanted to focus on creating other shows much like his hit sitcom Black-ish.

“I wanted to go off and create more shows like Black-ish, create things that I have ownership in, and do something a little bit different,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Speaking on his upcoming projects, he added: “We’re going out and pitching another drama called Miraculous, which I’m excited about, so looking forward to what that’s going to do.”

Anthony had briefly starred in the show’s spin-off Law and Order: Special Victims Unit in 2006 as Detective Lucius Blaine.

He worked alongside Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) as his temporary partner after Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) transferred.

Anthony will continue to be a success away from Law and Order as his work on Black-ish saw him gain 11 Emmy nominations.

Law & Order season 22 premieres on NBC on Thursday, September 22.
