Mrs Browns Boys fans call for show to be axed for good after painful special

Mrs Brown's Boys fans are switching off in their droves after blasting the show’s latest “painful” TV special.

The 30-minute episode, which aired on BBC One on New Year’s Day, saw fans vowing to switch off for good saying the show “used to be good” but has “lost its way.”

The series stars Brendan O’Carroll as Agnes Brown, a mother to six children in Dublin.

The special episode, titled Mammy’s Hair Loom, was one of four to be shown in 2023 and saw the once loved fictional character navigate life in Finglas for the second time in a couple of days.

The special saw Agnes waiting for the valuation of an antique vase which has been in the family for years.

And Buster and Dermot were convinced that Cathy's boyfriend Boris was a vampire.

“Suspicion surrounds Cathy’s creepy boyfriend, Boris. Buster and Dermot are convinced he is a vampire and hatch a plan to save Cathy, which leaves her mortified,” the synopsis of the 30-minute programme read.

While the show was once a cult hit, it seems as though many fans have grown tired of the format.

They wrote: “Just how many times is BBC going to keep flogging this dead donkey? #MrsBrownsBoys.”

A second viewer wrote: “Don’t understand why people like #mrsbrownsboys it’s not funny.

“There is nothing funny about a bloke in a dress unless it’s Rupals Drag Race Please someone explain why our licence fee is spent on rubbish like Mrs BB [sic]”.

Another blasted: “Not even 24 hours in to 2023 & already Mrs Brown’s Boys is on TV!!! That’s this year ruined! Thanks a lot BBC [sic],’ this user despaired at the show being one of the first things they watched in 2023.”

While a fourth dubbed it “painful” to watch, blasting: “@BBC how can we, the good people get a refund on our TV license for #mrsbrownsboys It is awful to the point of painful”.

Only 2.4million tuned in to BBC One to watch the show's Christmas episode, titled Shining Mammy, with viewers claiming it's now “unwatchable”.

The last full series of Mrs Brown's Boys aired in 2013 but since then it has returned for a number of festive specials.

However, not all comments were negative reviews with some of the show’s audience applauding it for its comedic efforts.

This Twitter account uploaded: “absolutely brilliant mrs browns episode, as expected [sic]”.

Underneath a screenshot of a scene from the episode, one user expressed: “I really love the costumes”.
