Paul O’Grady fans ‘in tears’ minutes into For the Love of Dogs

Watch a clip from the new series of Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs

The presenter and comedian, known for being passionate about dogs, filmed what would become his final series of Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs late last year. The first episode aired on Thursday, and fans tuning in admitted they were “in tears” just minutes in as they saw Paul open the ITV series for one last time.

On March 28, Paul’s husband Andre Portasioin announced the beloved presenter had died “unexpectedly but peacefully”.

The news was particularly shocking because just weeks before, Paul had enthusiastically talked about his upcoming projects, such as presenting Boom Radio’s Easter Sunday show.

He had also filmed series 11 of his fan favourite, For the Love of Dogs.

Before the first episode aired on Thursday, ITV introduced it as a tribute to the late Paul.

In the programme, dog-lover Paul was back at Battersea Dogs and Cats home meeting more four-legged friends.

A natural with animals, Paul put Newfoundland dog, Peggy, at ease before and after a life-changing operation she needed.

Paul also comforted a tiny bichon Katie who was terrified after arriving at the charity.

Staffy-labrador cross Grace has an obsession with water, and Paul was there to see her becoming reformed after some help from the charity.

In emotional scenes, Paul was unable to hide his heartbreak when he was forced to bid farewell to Peggy after she had recovered. As he was saying goodbye, he explained sadly that he didn’t have the space to adopt her.

Since he started on For the Love of Dogs, Paul adopted Chihuahua-Jack Russell cross Eddie, Maltese Conchita, mongrels Arfur and Nancy, Shih Tzu Boycie, and dachshund Sausage.

Fans watching the new instalment were overcome with emotion just minutes into the first episode.

Knowing the series would be the last and with Paul’s death so fresh in viewers’ minds, it’s no surprise they were moved to tears as the episode started.
