Political activist Kate Smurthwaite ruffled Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway’s feathers on Monday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain as she made it clear she was not proud to be British. Her comments came after Liz Truss resigned as Prime Minister after less than 50 days in office. However, Richard lashed out at the ITV guest as he stated he was proud to be from the UK.

During the interview, comedian and activist Kate exclaimed: “I take moderate issue with the question, are we all proud to be British?

“I mean when were we proud to be British?”

Her comments infuriated Richard who raised his hand in the air to say: “Hang on, I am, I’m proud to be British.”

The activist continued to talk over Richard telling viewers British history is not very impressive due to “the way we have treated people all around the world”.

Presenter Kate chimed in to say her final point was a fair one but the 55-year-old stressed she was also proud of her heritage.

The broadcaster stated: “Our political system has been the model for lots of other systems, hasn’t it?

“It’s been the longest in place the role of Prime Minister for more than 300 years.

“It has been used as an example maybe rightly or wrongly you might argue, but it has been used as one.

“So there was an element of pride in that, wasn’t there at one point?”

The activist proceeded to criticise the nation’s history, but another guest, commentator Dominique Samuels, questioned how her points were relevant.

“As an ethnic minority though, I don’t want to be lectured by people like you about things that happened hundreds of years ago – this is an old conversation,” Dominique stressed.

However, Kate fiercely replied: “Have we paid reparations for the way we treated people through the trans-Atlantic slave trade? No, we haven’t, how can we forget about that?”

As the debate continued heating up, swarms of viewers voice their opinions on Twitter.

Richard McCann commented: “Kate Smurthwaite has some utterly abhorrent views and her behaviour during various debates is appalling.”

Lisa Stanhope penned: “Thank goodness for Dominique Samuels! A voice of reason in an angry toxic narrative. Of course, politics does not change the ability to be proud to be British! There’s so much to be proud of. We learn from history. We are a community and we should be proud of the people.” (sic)

Karenza Mason added: “I am not proud of our government, but I am very proud to be British when I think of the hundreds of people that gave their lives to protect our country over the years and still continue to. It would make their sacrifices look like a waste of time. That would be unthinkable.”

Janet Forbes said: “I had to turn the mute button on, she was being controversial to boost her career, not that I’ve heard of her, but screeching, yelling, talking over people isn’t the way to do it.” (sic)

However, Steve agreed with Kate’s points, adding: “You’re right, it goes much deeper. Politics aside – classism, racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia are rife in Britain. Are we meant to be proud of that?”

Paul Carr remarked: “And she’s absolutely right! Lots of little things to be very proud of, but on a national level, what have we really to be proud of? Really?”

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays from 6am on ITV.
