One of the highlights of Christmas is no doubt sitting around the table ready to tuck into a festive feast. In the Christmas advert for Sainsbury’s, Countess Alison Hammond has plenty of demands for what she wants to eat and what she definitely doesn’t want on the table.

The festive video opens with a voice over describing: “In a far, far away land, a feast is being planned.”

The Countess sits on a throne in a medieval hall as chefs come forward with their selection of dishes.

Crab crumpets get the seal of approval along with cider glazed gammon.

Unfortunately, one young chef fails to impress as Alison asks: “You, what do you have?”

The cook comes forward and lifts the lid to reveal a standard Christmas pudding on fire.

The Countess pulls a face, adding: “I’ve never really like Christmas pudding.”

She blows out the flames and demands: “Bring me something different or else.”

An executioner standing next to the Countess can be seen holding an axe as the young chef appears terrified.

Wanting to impress her, he rushes off to experiment with a number of desserts to present at the feast.

From mixing caramel to running around with a digestive biscuit, he goes to great lengths to create a delicious dish.

Finally, at the festive feast, the Countess rings a bell and calls out: “Treaty time!”

The court looks on as the chef steps forward to unveil their new creation. What could it be?

Much to the Countess’ horror, it’s a Christmas pudding. Far from impressed, she takes a spoon to try it.

Surprisingly, she’s delighted with the result as she asks: “Is that caramelised biscuit?”

“Yes Countess,” the cook replies as she smiles: “Oof! That’s a bit of me.”

The court erupts in cheers as Alison congratulates the young chef: “Well done Babs!”

The Christmas advert this year is a far cry from 2021’s offering despite both focussing on a feast.

Other thrilling ads from the supermarket included Mog the cat, the much-loved Nativity play and Nicholas the Sweep.

Sadly the advert seems to have fallen flat with fans on Twitter as Ophelia complained: “Very poor effort sorry! Doesn’t capture the Christmas spirit at all.”

“That was rubbish! Where’s the story, where’s the emotion? I want tears and that feel good moment. I’m sorry a pudding doesn’t quite hit the spot. #nochristmasspirit #bahumbug,” Claire Walker added.
