Black Sabbath frontman and iconic metal artist Ozzy Osbourne, 73, has endured a number of severe health issues in recent years. Ozzy recently confirmed he’s finally able to hold his head up after life-altering back surgery, but his wife Sharon Osbourne claimed much of the pain could have been avoided.

Sharon has branded her husband’s latest operation to his back as “excessive” after he was left crying in agony.

Ozzy recently confirmed he had recovered after a spinal operation in June to adjust pins in his back following his ATV crash in 2003.

He also suffered a major fall in 2019 which devastated his already troubled spine.

“[The doctor] went in and did a really excessive operation he didn’t need,” Sharon recalled.

“So he went in and took things out and put two big metal plates with screws…”

Sharon and Ozzy discussed the recent operation with DJ Zane Lowe on his podcast on his Apple Music interview series.

Zane expressed his sympathies, commenting: “And the body rejected them.”

To which Sharon confirmed: “And his head, he couldn’t lift his head up.”

“When I was doing physical therapy, it was ripping the muscles,” Ozzy recalled.

Ozzy recently made a surprise live appearance in August at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in his hometown of Birmingham.

Less than two months earlier, on June 16, he confirmed he was “recuperating comfortably” following the major operation to his spine.

On Wednesday this week, Ozzy and Sharon appeared on Good Morning America to share the latest updates.

“Since I’ve had the surgery, I’ve improved quite considerably,” he said.

“I have to negotiate everywhere I want to go, and I tire easily, but I’m well. My family have been absolutely wonderful while I’ve been laid up.”

Explaining his pain before the operation, Sharon said: “These metal plates were working their way out.

“The debris was rubbing on his spinal cord. He would literally be crying in pain some days.”

She then joked: “[He’s] a pain in the butt. I mean, everything from heartbreaking to soul-destroying, to joys of him getting better.”

Ozzy was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2019, subsequently cancelling his 2020 North American tour to seek treatment in Switzerland.

Thankfully, the metal legend’s recent health complaints haven’t slowed down his musical career.

Later this year, he will be releasing his 13th solo album, titled Patient Number 9.

The record will feature guest appearances from Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Chad Smith, Metallica’s Robert Trujillo, and the Foo Fighters’ late drummer Taylor Hawkins.
