The Crown set to show Charles and Camilla ‘tampongate’ scandal ‘sympathetically’

The Crown's new series will tell the story of the infamous 'tampongate' scandal in a "sympathetic" manner

A sickening phone call between King Charles and the Queen Consort Camilla in 1989, was recorded by an amateur radio fan and took place while they were both married.

During the phone call, the then-Prince Charles is heard telling Camilla he wanted to be reincarnated as a tampon so he could "live inside" her.

The fan claimed to have come across the conversation as they moved between audio channels.

An audio recording and transcript of the conversation was published in the press, shaming the pair who were both married at the time – Charles, famously to Princess Diana.

But the call will be portrayed as a moment between "two young lovers" in the fifth series of the show, according to Netflix bosses.

There has, however, been controversy over the decision which has been branded "crass" and in "bad taste", according to sources.

Josh O'Connor, who portrays Prince Charles in series three and four of the show, said he did not want to be filmed saying the tampon lines in the series.

He told SiriusXM: "When they offered me the role, one of my first questions was – I say questions, I think it was pretty much a statement – 'We are not doing the tampon phone call'.

"[The Crown] was my one chance for my parents to see something [I've acted in] with no shame and there's no way I was going to scuttle that by talking about tampons on Netflix."

Dominic West plays Charles in the new series, and has previously described the phone call as "sordid and deeply, deeply embarrassing".

But he has now changed his mind, saying he feels sorry for the pair that the jaw-dropping conversation was exposed.

He said: "Looking back on it, and having to play it, what you're conscious of is that the blame was not with these two people, two lovers, who were having a private conversation.

"What's really [clear now] is how invasive and disgusting was the press's attention to it, that they printed it out verbatim and you could call a number and listen to the actual tape.

"I think it made me extremely sympathetic towards the two of them and what they'd gone through."
