The Repair Shop expert encounters unexpected issue while fixing cherished item

Brenton treats woodworm on box

The Repair Shop’s metal expert Brenton West came across a big problem with an item he was working on in the latest episode of the BBC favourite.

Guest Joanne hoped Brenton could restore a special, handcrafted box, which held precious memories for her.

She explained her nan had owned the box after her carpenter grandfather made it for her, and it was later passed down to Joanne’s mother.

Both Brenton and host Jay Blades were stunned that the blue and gold box, which depicted images of nature, had been handmade, and Joanne explained how proud her mother had been of it.

“I got married in 2016 in the August and I lost her in the October,” Joanne stated tearfully on the popular BBC programme.

“As much as my grandad made this box, for me, this is about my mum,” Joanne told Brenton and host Jay Blades.

“What would you like us to do with it?” Jay asked.

“At the moment, I don’t think it’s safe,” Joanne admitted, adding: “As you go into my house now it’s sort of tucked up in the corners because it’s got this here, it’s lethal,” as she pointed towards a shape edge of the box sticking out.

“We’ve got a bit missing down at the front here,” she also pointed out.

However, Brenton soon realised one task had to be undertaken before he could work on the restoration.

“I’ve brought Joanne’s box outside because I’ve noticed the wood is full of woodworm,” Brenton later explained.

“So before I do any work on it I’m going to treat this woodworm… so every wooden surface I could see I’m going to cover with this stuff and hopefully that’ll be the end of the problem.

“So woodworm is an infliction that a lot of furniture and old houses get.

“It’s a little beetle that bores its way into the wood and lays eggs in the wood then bores its way back out again.

“I think we just about caught this in time.”

Thankfully, the issue was resolved and Brenton soon had the box looking as good as new.

Joanne wasn’t disappointed when she came to collect her mother’s cherished box and broke down in tears.

“You can’t even tell there was a bit missing there… oh my god,” she exclaimed before adding: “It’s nice and shiny… thank you.

“I’m speechless, I really, really am. I just wish she could see it.

“Oh my goodness… It’s amazing, thank you.”

The Repair Shop continues on Tuesday at 4.30pm on BBC One.
