All Creatures Great and Small season three has just arrived on Channel 5 and the uplifting drama featured the wedding of Helen Alderson (played by Rachel Shenton) and James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph). As the big day drew closer, Siegfried (Sam West) and Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) reflected on their own relationships. Siegfried opened up about his late wife, Evelyn, and here’s all you need to know about their real romance.

Who was Siegfried Farnon’s wife?

In the first episode of All Creatures Great and Small, Mrs Hall was looking through boxes of old treasures.

She found an old photo of Siegfried with one of his former colleagues, and the pair enjoyed looking back on days gone by.

Siegfried said: “I haven’t seen this stuff for years, Evelyn boxed it all up before she died.

“She was very practical, she thought I was perhaps a bit lucky in that respect.

“I had to get a day’s extension to my leave so we could marry.”

He was in fact married to Audrey Adamson, and they were husband and wife for 53 years.

They had a daughter, Jan, and son, Alan together, and he was heartbroken when Audrey died in 1995.

So much so, that he ended up taking his own life two weeks later, on June 28.

His brother Brian, who inspired Tristan, had died in 1988 and Alf Wight (James Herriot), died four months previously in 1995.

Sfgate.com shared an obituary written at the time of Donald’s death and it quoted one of his close friends.

William Foggitt said of Donald: “He missed Alf Wight, and when Audrey died he just faded.

“He was devoted to her, and he was heartbroken when she died.”

Peter Wright, otherwise known as The Yorkshire Vet, shared a photo of the couple on his Twitter account.

Peter had worked for Donald and was very close to the vet and his wife.

Donald was seen smiling in the photo, as Audrey held onto his arm. No cause of death was given for Audrey.

In the new season of All Creatures Great and Small, Siegfried may continue to explore new relationships.

After coming to terms with the fact he was entitled to start a new romance, he formed a close bond with Diana Brompton (Dorothy Atkinson).

Fans will have to wait and see whether their friendship blossoms into something more, if Siegfried is inspired by James’ wedding.

All Creatures Great and Small airs on Thursdays on Channel 5 at 9pm.
