Schoolboy, 15, dies after being hit by a train in leafy Ivybridge in Devon just minutes into the start of the school day

A teenage school pupil was tragically killed today after being struck by a train in Devon.

The youth, aged 15 or 16, was a year 11 pupil at Ivybridge Community College in the town of Ivybridge.

The incident is understood to have occurred just minutes into the school day.

British Transport Police were called to the scene just after 9am after reports of a casualty on the track.

But the victim was sadly  pronounced dead at the scene.

BTP said the death was not suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner. 

The school – which is located just 100 metres from the railway line – later told parents and carers of pupils that ‘one of our much loved students from Year 11 tragically died’.

The college principal Rachel Hutchinson said the pupil’s family had been informed and students had also been informed of the death.

Around 2,400 pupils attend the school which has more than 250 staff.
