Tourist 'raped by hotel worker' at Maldives resort as he told victim 'no need to be ashamed, I'll be a gentleman' | The Sun

A TOURIST has claimed she was raped by a butler at a Maldives hotel – as he chillingly told her "no need to be ashamed, I'll be a gentleman".

Xu Yitong, 26, was staying at the Ritz-Carlton Maldives on the Fari Islands before she was allegedly sexually assaulted.

The Sydney student arrived in the Maldives on June 6 for a short solo trip.

But the nightmare struck when the woman was assigned a butler after she accidentally damaged her phone with water – meaning she was unable to contact her family.

It has been reported that when the butler was sent to Xu's room for assistance, he lent her his phone, but then allegedly began to sexually harass her.

The woman, who according to News.au, has agreed to waive her anonymity to share her story, submitted a complaint of “criminal sexual contact” at Thulusdhoo station on June 11.

But she took to Twitter on June 18 to explain her shocking alleged story and claimed that the officers were not helpful in her horror experience.

“He took a piece of chewing gum and started chewing and asked me if I wanted to kiss, which left me numb,” she said.

She recalled going "blank" after he made his advances, but he continued to force himself onto her.

Xu then told how the butler allegedly asked is she was gay and told her not to be "ashamed" when she rejected his advances towards her.

“I was in my pyjamas. He started forcing his tongue into my mouth and said ‘I will be a gentleman’,” she continued.

The harrowing experience continued further and saw the butler allegedly removing his pants.

Xu said he sexually assaulted her before he left.

She said she then reported the incident to the resort staff and called the police who took her statement.

Xu claimed that she underwent medical examinations and had scratches and bruises all over her body.

She said she was then kicked out of the hotel because they “could no longer arrange my accommodation”.

“I left the hotel and there wasn’t even an apology. You only train your housekeepers to ask for tips. I was raped in your hotel and you did nothing. You told me I did this to get a free stay. I paid the full amount to the hotel. I’m a Chinese living in Australia. My family is well-reputed and rich,” she said in her tweet.

Local media have reported that the Maldives Police officers are yet to make any arrests based on the tourist’s complaint.

They said they have taken the “necessary samples” for investigation, but declined to give further information on the case.

Speaking to The Independent, Xu said: "'Till now (I have received) no official statement from Maldives government or tourism ministry or police.

"I believe the authorities in Maldives – 'specially the police – are trying to cover up the incident."

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives has reportedly said it is investigating a tourist’s claim and was working with local investigators.

“We take such allegations seriously and this matter is currently with the police,” a spokesperson said.

“The safety and well-being of our guests and associates are of the utmost importance.

“We continue to co-operate with the authorities, and are in regular communication with the guest.”
