Shane MacGowans life-changing health woes to tragic loss as wife issues update

Victoria Mary Clarke reveals how she met Shane MacGowan

The Pogues star Shane MacGowan’s wife Victoria Mary Clarke has been keeping fans up to date with his health since he was hospitalised last year following a viral encephalitis diagnosis.

In what has been a tough few years for the singer, the 65-year-old was faced with more bad news earlier this year following the death of his dear friend Sinead O’Connor in July aged 56.

In an emotional lengthy statement shortly after learning the news, Shane and Victoria said: “We don’t really have words for this but we want to thank you Sinead.

“For your love and your friendship and your compassion and your humour and your incredible music.”

Referring to Sinead’s son Shane death last year, they added: “We pray that you are at peace now with your beautiful boy. Love Victoria and Shane.”

At the time of Sinead’s son’s death, the pair wrote: “Sinead you have always been there for me and for so many people, you have been a comfort & a soul who is not afraid to feel the pain of the suffering.

“You have always tried to heal & help. I pray that you can be comforted & find strength, healing & peace in your own sorrow & loss.”

In Victoria’s latest update on Shane’s health, she spoke of “terrifying fears of loss” as he seemingly remains in hospital.

The new photo, shared with her 27,000 Instagram followers, shows the pair sharing a tender kiss from what appears to be a hospital bed.

As part of the lengthy post, Victoria admitted “love can also feel painful” as she hinted at the tough time the pair are currently going through.

Many of Shane’s wife’s followers flocked to the comments section to send their well wishes.

The author shed light on Shane’s health woes last year after he was treated for viral encephalitis.

According to the NHS, the medical condition is uncommon but serious and causes inflammation in the brain.

Around the same time, Shane also reportedly contracted shingles which spread to his eye.

Speaking to The Spectator last year, the singer revealed he was using a “sumptuous” hospital bed and needed daily help from carers due to his mobility issues.

The update came after he suffered a nasty fall which resulted in him breaking his pelvis in 2015.

In an interview with Vice at the time he said: “It was a fall and I fell the wrong way.

“I broke my pelvis, which is the worst thing you can do. I’m lame in one leg, I can’t walk around the room without a crutch.

“I am getting better, but it’s taking a very long time. It’s the longest I’ve ever taken to recover from an injury. And I’ve had a lot of injuries.”
