Love Islands Gemma Owen had pocket money cut off by dad Michael in savage way

Gemma Owen, the daughter of England football ace Michael Owen, has previously complained about her millionaire father cutting off her pocket money when she was 18.

The now 19 year old, who is a contestant on this year’s Love Island, was less than impressed when her father told her to “get a job” in a pub, to earn her own money.

Michael and international dressage rider Gemma appeared on Emily Dean's Walking The Dog podcast, and as they took a stroll in Wiltshire, Michael spilled that his eldest daughter was ‘fuming’ at his suggestion that she find work.

Gemma complained about her famous father cutting off her allowance, saying: "Mine started late and stopped.

"It's not fair, honestly.

"Pocket money only started for me a few years ago. My brother and sisters have had a good few years on me. In that way it's not fair.”

Michael tried to explain his reasoning, saying: "It stops when you're 18.”

He continued: "If you want money so much get out and work. There's a pub down the road – work behind the bar or something.”

He added: "Nothing is fair in our house. Trying to balance all the kids and the wife is the most impossible job.”

Although former Liverpool great, Michael, stopped Gemma’s allowance, he did stump up the cash to get his daughter’s swimwear business, OG Beachwear, rolling, as a gift for her 18th birthday.

Michael, who is father to James Michael, 16, Emily May, 14, and Jessica, 12, along with Gemma, talked about walking the line between giving his kids everything and not making them become spoiled.

He said: "You want to give your children the best start and best chance,

"But you're always wrestling with the fact that if you make it so easy, is she going to learn from any mistakes?

"So you're always wrestling in life with everything like that and not making them spoilt.”

Gemma has attracted a lot of attention since entering the Love Island villa as one of the day one contestants.

Despite initially being paired up by the public with 23 year old Welsh student, Liam Llewelyn, Gemma has found herself coupled up with Italian hunk, Davide Sanclimenti, 27, in the show’s first recoupling.

Davide entered the villa after the first ten contestants, and after receiving a famous Love Island text, he was given the task of picking one of the five girls to couple up with after 24 hours of being in the villa.

The dramatic recoupling has left Liam single and vulnerable in the lavish Majorcan villa.

Viewers of the hit ITV show will get to see Gemma and Davide’s first date on the show’s third episode which airs on Wednesday 8 June.
