The Royle Family star unrecognisable 25 years after hit aired – and he's the voice of one of your favourite TV shows | The Sun

A SITCOM star is unrecognisable 25 years after the hit aired – and he's the voice of one of your favourite TV shows.

Craig Cash is best known for playing Dave in The Royle Family, which ran for three series from 1998 to 2000.

The 62-year-old, from Manchester, also took on the role of the narrator for Gogglebox in 2016.

The actor and comedian replaced his good friend Caroline Aherne, who sadly passed away at her home in Timperley.

He introduces audiences to the cast and what they're tuning into each week.

Craig recently admitted that some members of the public get caught off guard when they recognise his voice.

Think you know Love Island? Then try my annual quiz… it is what it is

"It's weird because years ago people would approach me and talk about the Royle Family and they still do, but the weird thing about Gogglebox is younger people who haven't seen the Royle's or previous TV work of mine, some don’t even know what I look like,’ he told Metro.co.uk.

"I can be in a queue and if someone says something to me and I talk the whole queue looks around when they hear my voice.

"I have people coming to me asking if I can say and record something for them and I often oblige if they are nice but if I am out for a meal…my wife is staring at me as I’m sitting there saying 'In Brighton…'."

In an interview in 2018 Craig spoke out about the emotional impact of filling his close pal's shoes after she passed away.

Speaking to Radio Times he said: "In November 2013, when she was gravely ill with cancer, Caroline asked if I'd narrate Gogglebox when she wasn't up to it.

"Of course, I said yes; it was a very sad time and I wanted to do right by her and by the programme.

"Caroline was well and then unwell, well and unwell, so I filled in whenever she needed me to.

"When Caroline died in July 2016, I took over narrating duties."

He is married to Stephanie Davies and the couple have two sons, Harry and Billy.

During his early career he teamed up a lot with his comedy writing pal Aherne, which included The Fast Show and The Mrs Merton Show.

Craig is also known for the 2015 series After Hours.
