Scottish sheep spotted in hilarious foam collar and motorcycle helmet

What are ewe wearing? Farmer puts foam collars on his sheep to stop them getting stuck in fences – while young lamb opts for a motorcycle helmet instead

  • Two sheep were spotted in a field with foam collars on near Aberdeen, Scotland
  • Another was seen stumbling around in a motorcycle helmet on the Isle of Tiree

Hilarious pictures show two sheep with squares of foam on their head as the farmer’s ingenious tactic to stop them from getting stuck in the fence.

The pair were snapped in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, feeding their offspring in a field while prancing around with what appears to be a cushion of foam around their necks.

Prison officer Mark Deans, 35, captured the ‘un-ewe-sual’ head gear on Thursday while coming home from his girlfriend’s mother’s house.

The bizarre image left Mark, from Aberdeen, in stitches. He said: ‘I guess this farmer has a sense of humour, I initially went over to look because I was worried the sheep’s head was stuck in a bucket but no it was foam.

‘There is a purpose for it, putting foam on the sheep’s heads to stop them getting stuck in the fence but it’s funny looking.

‘Who are ewe looking at?’: This sheep was pictured with its young sporting a cushion of foam around its neck in Scotland

While another sheep looked perplexed as it was having its photo taken by prison officer Mark Deans, 35, as it feed its offspring

‘The sheep is safe, I got a bit of a laugh and I think the photos will bring people a smile.’

The snap comes days after a clumsy lamb was spotted stumbling around in circles in another Scottish field – with a motorcycle helmet over its head.

Ettie MacDonald was left stunned when he stopped his car on Tuesday morning to help what he thought was a sheep stuck in a feeding bucket.

However, as the 46-year-old walked onto the field, on the Isle of Tiree, he realised the four-week-old ewe was in fact wearing a black crash helmet.

Owner Sheila MacKinnon didn’t believe Ettie when he rang to tell her so he shot photos and a video of the confused lamb ‘walking around in circles’ with the safety gear fitted ‘perfectly’.

Upon seeing proof the cackling 54-year-old ‘couldn’t believe how funny it was’ and thanked the good Samaritan who removed the helmet.

She admitted she had no idea the plastic headgear was in the field but believes it must have been left in the long grass and the nosey lamb got stuck in it when it bent down to put its head inside.

Her Facebook post explaining the bizarre mishap has been viewed more than 400,000 times and shared more than 6,000 times, with one user joking the sheep must ride a ‘LAMBretta’.

Ettie said: ‘It was on its head perfectly. It was the right way round and the sheep suited it. It was almost the perfect size. Maybe I should have opened the visor for it.

‘At first I didn’t know what it was and thought it was a bucket but when I got closer I realised it was a crash helmet. I couldn’t believe it.

‘I had to prove it with pictures and a video because I think Sheila thought I was taking the mick.

‘I took it off after I took the video then left the helmet by the field then just went on my way to work.

‘I’m glad I was there because it would have been stressed eventually but it was getting plenty of air in there and just walking around in circles.

‘People are having a laugh at it because something that’s ended well for a change.’

The mum-of-two says the lamb is ‘absolutely fine’ and has been jumping around the field as normal.

She’s thankful joiner Ettie was driving past at the time to save the lamb from becoming distressed by the unfortunate situation.

Sheila said: ‘Usually if the phone rings before 8am then there’s something wrong. When he told me I went quiet and just said ‘what?’.

‘I told him he needed to send me a picture because I wouldn’t believe it. When I saw them I couldn’t believe how funny it was.

‘Lambs are nosey and they like to stick their heads in everything but for it to be a helmet and it be on the right way, it feels like it can’t be real.

‘Thank god Ettie happened to be driving past.’

Sheila’s Facebook post has since earned almost 3,000 comments with users finding the lamb’s predicament hilarious.

Her Facebook post said: ‘When the house phone rings before eight in the morning you automatically think ‘is there something wrong?’.

‘A man said, ‘Hello Sheila, I’ve just driven past your field and there’s a lamb walking about with a crash helmet on! And not only that but he’s got it on the right way round’.

‘Is it April the 1st? No, it’s definitely May! Thank you Ettie for noticing it and removing it. Also for proving to me that it had actually happened by sending me the photos.’

Another said: ‘I think someone’s fleeced his bike.’
