Paul Hollywood promises to be ‘mean with handshakes’ on this year’s GBBO

The Great British Bake Off contestants know they’re doing something right if they receive one of Paul Hollywood’s famous handshakes.

But the 57-year-old judge has revealed we won’t be seeing much of his trademark move in the new series.

Speaking to OK! alongside fellow judge Prue Leith and new presenter Alison Hammond, the trio opened up about their time in the white tent.

As Paul admitted that he’s “always straight” with the bakers, Alison said: “There were not many handshakes, though, this year.”

He then confirmed: “No, I was mean with the handshakes!”

The gesture has become a top honour on the show over the years, dished out by Paul on rare occasions when he believes a bake is perfect.

And it sounds like Paul didn't hold back when it came to giving Alison some advice, either.

Alison, 48, who is co-hosting alongside Noel Fielding after Matt Lucas' departure, admitted that working on the show has inspired her to bake more.

"I have learnt lots," she said. "I made brownies twice. But Paul said they were bitter."

She added: "I was really upset!"

Meanwhile, long-time judges Paul and Prue also discussed why they still enjoy doing the show so much.

"I still love it," Paul said. "When I turn up in the tent, I have a little moment."

Prue, 83, said added: "Well, we’ve been doing it for a very long time, so we’re now very old chums. Paul never ceases to tease me.

"His great line of teasing, which has got worse and worse, is that I’m this tottering old lady who needs to be helped.

"'Shall I get your Zimmer frame for you, dearie?' It drives me absolutely up the wall, but it is very funny."

The iconic show is returning to screens on Tuesday 26 September at 8pm.

Prue confirmed the news as she announced: "We are back! Get the date in your diary, set a reminder and join us in the tent."

Fans rushed to social media to share their excitement. One wrote" "SO EXCITED, been waiting a long time," wile another said: "Can't wait!"

A third added: "Woo hoo!! I’ve been waiting."
